Red Hat Certified Technician

Red Hat Certified Technicians install, attach, configure and manage new Red Hat systems that are a part of a production network. They are professionals that can handle anything related to core system administration tasks common to all systems. They have vast knowledge about workstations, servers, network devices and other kinds of systems.

Technicians must have the ability to use necessary tools for handling files, directories, command-line environments, and documentation. They must be well-versed about how to operate systems, which include activities such as booting into different run levels and identifying processes. They must have a good understanding of virtual machines and controlling services. It is the responsibility of a Red Hat Certified Technician to configure local storage with the help of partitions and logical volumes.

Red Hat Certified Technicians (RHCT) create and install file systems and file system attributes which include encryption, permissions, and access control lists. They also play an active role in software installations, updates, and core services. Technicians manage users and groups that include the use of a centralized directory for authentication. They also monitor basic firewall security and SELinux configuration.

Technicians must have in-depth knowledge about hardware limitations. They must install and configure Red Hat Linux and X Window systems. It is their responsibility to perform necessary Red Hat Linux System Administration. Red Hat Certified System Administrators conduct basic diagnostics and troubleshoot any Linux-related issues.

Job Description

Red Hat Certified Technicians must know how to use and manage Red Hat Linux Enterprise operating systems in a networked environment. They must have a good command of file systems and know commands relating to Linux, X Window systems, KDE and GNOME desktop environments. They further play an active role in installing and configuring Red Hat operating systems.

Red Hat Certified System Administrators must have a good understanding of how to access and manage files from a command line. They play an active role in creating, viewing and editing text files. It is the responsibility of Red Hat Certified Technicians to manage local Linux users and groups. They must also control access to files using Linux file system permissions.

Certified Technicians manage workstation and server environments in a physical and virtual environment. They monitor common system hardware and manage Linux printing subsystems. They also install Red Hat Linux interactively and effectively, and they must design and manage Linux filesystems.

A Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) must monitor and manage Linux processes. They must further configure and secure OpenSSH services and archive and copy files between systems. They also play an active role in controlling services and daemons, and they must manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux Networking along with analyzing and storing logs.

Technicians should be able to perform user and group administration and be able to integrate a workstation within an existing network as well as organize a workstation as a client with NIS, DNS and DHCP services. They further must know how to automate tasks with at, cron, and anacron.

Technicians must schedule future Linux tasks. They must manage the priority of Linux processes. Certified technicians connect network-defined users and groups. They must be able to add disks, partitions and file systems to the Linux System. Technicians further must control access to files with Access Control Lists (ACL’s), and they must manage SELinux Security.

Red Hat Certified Technicians play an active role in backing up filesystems to tape and tar archives. They must be able to install and update software packages using RPM. They further must configure GNOME d.e and basic host security. Technicians are also responsible for computer performance, memory and process management.

Technicians must be able to install and update software packages. They should know how to create and edit text files with vim. They must also know how to access Linux file systems and must be well-versed with virtualized systems as well. They further must automate installations with Kickstart and should know how to use regular expressions with grep.

Technicians manage Logical Volume Management (LVM) Storage. They have to control and troubleshoot Red Hat Enterprise Linux boot processes. They must also access network storage with Network File System (NFS) and use autofs and command line tools to mount and unmount SMB file systems. Finally, they must have a good understanding of how to limit network communication within a firewall.

Educational Qualifications

Red Hat Certified Technicians must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Electronics or some related field. Employers also prefer candidates with prior experience. Some organizations want individuals who have a master’s degree or a certain specialization related to network administration.
